In this short series, we’re sharing our experiences, as well as pilgrim and local insights, into five of the bigger town and city stops along the Camino de Santiago (Camino Frances) pilgrimage route. The towns and cities of Pamplona, Logroño, Burgos, Leon and Santiago de Compostela all make for perfect places for a rest day along the Camino or even just a weekend away.
My hope is that this series will provide you with some really useful information and advice if you’re planning your own Camino or just some inspiration for a different weekend away in some more authentically Spanish cities than the usual tourist haunts.

First a quick hello and welcome to all of the new subscribers who have joined us here recently, it’s so good to see you here! This week is the second in our series on Cities of the Camino, with one of my favourite rest days, Logroño.
We arrived in Logroño, our first official rest day stop on the Camino de Santiago, on May 26th. It was day eight and our longest day so far, walking 28km in the hot sunshine from Los Arcos. Some of our family group were nursing hangovers from an enjoyable evening in a local bar with fellow pilgrims. We had set out at sunrise, and my daughter and I had put strides ahead of the boys to get ahead of the heat. It was a glorious morning and we met many friendly pilgrims along the way that day.
Our arrival in Logroño in the middle of the afternoon turned out to be one of the most memorable moments of my Camino. The boys had pulled slightly ahead by the time we were there and so Megan and I walked into the city together. As we arrived in a central square just off the main Calle, a group of Spanish pilgrims who we’d come across a few times over the past few days saw Megan and cheered. She was embarrassed at the attention, no doubt, but it was a lovely moment of recognition for what my then 11-year-old daughter was achieving on this walk.
Logroño turned out to be one of our favourite stops on the Camino, a beautiful city and a welcome break a week into our adventure.
